Why do we like looking at ourselves?

Selfies are a pretty big thing right now. But, think about it, therew ere selfies before there were smartphones with front facing cameras and there were selfies before cameras were even invented. That's basically what my proect has been about. Selfies have alwys been around simply in a different form. Centuries ago, people paid to sit for hours while someone painted their portrait and then they'd go ahead and hang it on their wall. Technology has simply mafe it a hundred times easier for us to have images of ourselves. I think selfies really made themselves present in society when the iPhone was invented. With smartphones nowadays, taking a selfie is simple and, quite literally, at arm's reach. Selfies have become more and more popular thorughout the years. So much so that phones come with front facing cameras. Yet, while it has become easiert to take selfies, it has at the same time, become more difficult as expectations of selfies have been raised with lighting and angles needed to be taken into account (at least for those on social media). Above, in the box, is the number of pictures on instagram tagged #selfie. I have been keeping track of that number since November when the number was 226,300,547. In 6 months the number has increased by 62,852,417 photos. That's ust the number of selfies that have been tagged, it's not even the real number on selfies on instagram. What if we could count the number of selfies on all social media? How large do you think the number would be?
