Why are we obssessed with ourselves?

Selfies are more popular now than I think they ever were. I don’t know if it’s due to the ability of simply stretching your arm in front of us and pressing a single button, or if humans have just become more self-absorbed. Maybe it’s a combination of both. Nevertheless, “selfies” have been around since before cameras were invented. Think about it. Before humans had means to click a button and have an image of themselves, they paid someone to paint them on a canvas. Before cameras, people went through the struggle of sitting still for hours so that someone could paint them. Why is it that people have always felt it necessary to have an image of themselves? Why do we like looking at ourselves? We now have the simplicity of clicking a button and we, therefore, can have hundreds or thousands of pictures of ourselves. But why do we want them? Is it weird? Is it normal?

I think it’s normal for people to want an image or images of themselves. We have one life and we live as who we are. We only know life through our own eyes. Even when we don’t know what we want or who we want to become, all we really know is us. We get to see everyone and everyone gets to see us, but we are unable to see ourselves. Without reflections or photos, we wouldn’t know what others see when they look at us. How weird would it be to not know what we look like? Some people say that if we saw ourselves walking down the street, we wouldn't recognize ourselves. I don't know if it's true or not because people take so many selfies nowadays that I feel as though they know exactly what they look like, but I guess we'll never know. I believe that wanting to know what we look like is normal because it's essentially wanting to know who we are. The power that a face holds is underrated. A face holds something that the body doesn't; a face gives a body life, a story. It would be weird not to want that for ourselves.

But why do we want them? Is it weird? Is it normal?
