ABOUT MY CAPSTONE

There are very few things that I am genuinely interested in, which is why I postponed making a decision for my Capstone Project focus until beyond the last minute. At first, I thought I would go with the safe decision to stick with something that I have been interested in for a long time now. In 2012, when my mom asked me if I wanted to take a photography class at the DeKoven Center on Mondays after school

for a few weeks, I didn’t think that photography would become such a big part of my life. I simply thought it would be fun to learn how to use “one of those big cameras.” Now here I am, three years later, writing my capstone project about something that seemed so insignificant back then. So although I knew that I wanted my project to revolve around something that had to do with photography, I wasn’t sure of where I wanted to go with it. This is where Mr. Inouye helped me brainstorm ideas until we concluded atportraiture. I realized that there is so much history and present within portraiture that it wouldn’t be difficult to run out of paths to study. After realizing just how far portraiture goes, Mr. Inouye and I asked ourselves “Why are we obsessed with ourselves?” So, I began my project by thinking about and answering that question.
